Product Description
New York Times bestselling author Jodi Picoult is widely acclaimed for her keen insights into the hearts and minds of real people. Now she tells the emotionally riveting story of a family torn apart by conflicting needs and a passionate love that triumphs over human weakness.

Anna is not sick, but she might as well be. By age thirteen, she has undergone countless surgeries, transfusions, and shots so that her older sister, Kate, can somehow fight the leukemia that has plagued her since childhood. The product of preimplantation genetic diagnosis, Anna was conceived as a bone marrow match for Kate -- a life and a role that she has never challenged...until now. Like most teenagers, Anna is beginning to question who she truly is. But unlike most teenagers, she has always been defined in terms of her sister -- and so Anna makes a decision that for most would be unthinkable, a decision that will tear her family apart and have perhaps fatal consequences for the sister she loves.

My Sister's Keeper examines what it means to be a good parent, a good sister, a good person. Is it morally correct to do whatever it takes to save a child's life, even if that means infringing upon the rights of another? Is it worth trying to discover who you really are, if that quest makes you like yourself less? Should you follow your own heart, or let others lead you? Once again, in My Sister's Keeper, Jodi Picoult tackles a controversial real-life subject with grace, wisdom, and sensitivity.

4 out of 5 stars Grab a box of tissues before you read!   August 20, 2010

This is one of those books that pulls you in from the beginning. I read this book in 2 days, I just couldn't put it down. It is very sad at the end and tissues are highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars I got what I ordered   August 18, 2010

The book came quickly and in good repair.

I don't think I love Jodi Picoult's style of writing. The books are entertaining enough but they seem to have about three hundred paged in the middle that drag on in repetitive information that doesn't really effect the plot and climax of the story. I don't think I'll be reading any more of her books until I have read all the other hundreds of books on my list.

1 out of 5 stars Stay away from this book   August 10, 2010

I only gave this book one star because I don't have the option to give no star. I have never written any review in my life but I felt obliged to write this review so that no one else would waste 10 dollars and a few hours on this book. This book is bad from the beginning to the end. The writer does not have the skill to carry such a complicated and heavy topic. Everything and everyone was poorly written, superficial and unpredictably predictable (unpredictable because one would never expect such cheesy plots from a best-seller). To make it worse, the writer added a very unrealistic sub-plot - the love story between the lawyer and the guardian, the kind of love story that not even a 15 years old dreamy girl would buy it - handsome rich popular boy fell in love with social outcast ugly girl, boy got a fatal disease and left the girl because he did not want her to suffer with him, girl hated the boy but also could not forget him or love him less, boy did not die and became a succesful lawyer and met the girl again 20 years later and they are still in love with each other, happy ending. I suspect the writer was only fulfilling her own teenage fanatsy through this sub-plot as it clearly does not add anything to the story. This book is an insult to any self-respecting reader. I am mortified when I learn that this book is a best seller and was made into a movie - how could anyone like this book is beyond me.

5 out of 5 stars No Fairy-Tale Ending   August 8, 2010
L. Vale (San Diego, CA United States)
Ah, so many people criticize the ending of this book, but in truth, that is what makes it a fabulous read and a real stunner. Having lived over 60 years and having spent over 32 years in the court system, I can tell you the issues were finely drawn and an intriguing look into today's ethical and social ethos. There are a handful of cases I've seen that had surprise and tragic endings in REAL life, and this was certainly a valid and believable way to end this novel, notwithstanding people who like to believe that there are ALWAYS fairy-tale endings. Believe me, folks, there are some very ugly realities and very ugly endings out there, and I applaud Ms. Picoult for not taking the coward's way out.

5 out of 5 stars Such a wonderful book!   August 7, 2010

I must say, I was very hesitant to read this novel because of how much I disliked the film adaptation, but I am SO glad I gave it a chance. I loved this book! From the very first chapter, I was hooked. Jodi Picoult has quickly become one of my favorite authors. She has an amazing grasp of the language and I feel like she "gets" her characters, makes them real which is something that so many authors just cannot do. I found myself changing opinions about a few of the characters as the book went on, they all felt so real and I felt sympathy for each of them in some way. The situation that the central family is in is something unimaginable. I can see things from both sides, from the mother's point of view and from Anna's point of view. I can't imagine how difficult some of these decisions would be to make. I'm not sure there is a right choice in some instances, maybe just the lesser of two evils. I cried a lot while reading this book. I had been warned to keep a box of tissues nearby, but kind of took that with a grain of salt. Boy, I sure wish I had had some around (I ended up using my sleeve to wipe away tears quite a bit). This is such a powerful novel, I was seriously blown away by it. I highly recommend this one to everyone. Actually, I recommend most of Ms. Picoult's novels. She is an amazing talent. I think this one ranks as my second favorite of her novels thus far. The ending to this novel was so much better than the ending that was given in the film, it is very different. I personally think the book's ending is way more plausable and I felt it more, hope that sounds right. Just go out and read this, I cannot say enough good things about it. Loved it!
