Product Description Are you plagued by fears, phobias, or panic attacks? Do you toss and turn at night with a knot in your stomach, worrying about your job, your family, work, your health, or relationships? Do you suffer from crippling shyness, obsessive doubts, or feelings of insecurity? What you may not realize is that these fears are almost never based on reality. Anxiety is one of the world’s oldest cons. When you’re anxious, you’re actually fooling yourself. You are telling yourself things that simply aren’t true. See if you can recognize yourself in any of these distortions: All-or-Nothing Thinking: “My mind will go blank when I give my presentation at work, and everyone will think I’m an idiot.” Fortune Telling: “I just know I’ll freeze up and blow it when I take my test.” Mind Reading: “Everyone at this party can see how nervous I am.” Magnification: “Flying is so dangerous. I think this plane is going to crash!” Should Statements: “I shouldn’t be so anxious and insecure. Other people don’t feel this way.” Emotional Reasoning: “I feel like I’m on the verge of cracking up!” Self-Blame: “What’s wrong with me? I’m such a loser!” Mental Filter: “Why can’t I get anything done? My life seems like one long procrastination.” Now imagine what it be like to live a life that’s free of worries and self-doubt; to go to sleep at night feeling peaceful and relaxed; to overcome your shyness and have fun with other people; to give dynamic presentations without worrying yourself sick ahead of time; to enjoy greater creativity, productivity and self-confidence. Does that sound impossible? The truth is you can defeat your fears. In When Panic Attacks, Dr. Burns takes you by the hand and shows you how to overcome every conceivable kind of anxiety. In fact, you will learn how to use more than forty simple, effective techniques, and the moment you put the lie to the distorted thoughts that plague you, your fears will immediately disappear. Dr. Burns also shares the latest research on the drugs commonly prescribed for anxiety and depression and explains why they may sometimes do more harm than good. This is not pop psychology but proven, fast-acting techniques that have been shown to be more effective than medications. When Panic Attacks is an indispensable handbook for anyone who’s worried sick and sick of worrying.

I feel better already August 7, 2010 steve az great advice and very good real-life examples. if you or anyone you know struggles a little or a lot with anxiety or depression issues, these CDs and/or the book can lessen the symptoms without analyzing your past and your childhood. good advice and readily useful! however, as the author states, if you have really serious issues, it is also wise to see a professional therapist.
Get on the road to recovery! May 19, 2010 Jenny (Chicagoland, IL USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm so glad somebody recommended this author to me for my anxiety problems! Everybody deals with anxiety on some level, and all types of anxiety problems can be improved by this book, from fear of public speaking, to panic attacks or agoraphobia. Unlike other anxiety books I've read, this book is written in an upbeat and hopeful way that has lifted my spirit from just reading it. Reading does help, but if you want to get better, you'll have to be brave and do the exercises. Don't run away from your anxiety, face it, work through it, and get better! This book is worth much more than the cost, so why don't you give it a try? I've already improved a lot! It will guide you on the way to recovery.
When panic attacks May 1, 2010 Michael Barry (METHUEN, MA, US) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Well, i am still tackling the first couple of chapters, but what i have seen so far has been great. I really feel that if i can apply the techniques presented, i can change my thinking and therefor my life. I would recommend this book to enable people with anxiety/depression to have a few more tools in their tool box to deal with these horrible conditions.
The Tool that will save your life April 9, 2010 Daniel Gonzalez (Chicago Usa) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
If you want freedom from a panic attacks, and if you want to get your life back you must read and work with this book.
This book gives you all that's necessary to WORK with and get ride of your fears, its not just a book, as I said before its a tool that you'll have to USE and work with every day.
If you suffer from panic attacks and depression, give it a shot, believe me you will not be disappointed
All you'll have to do here are the exercises in order to feel better. Not just read trough the entire book and hope to get better, this means writing your answers as many times as necessary. It also means that you'll have to face your fears.
I know that it sounds so scary at fist but this book will guide hand to hand you all the way, step by step in a sometimes humorous ways to make it easy to accomplish.
There is no parent-blaming, no magic, not sitting in a couch to talk about your childhood, just common sense and a lot of thinking to be deal with.
I wish I could contact Dr. Burns myself to let him know that he changed my life in a very positive way. Thanks to him I'm back in my feet and ready to face anything that comes.
Change those negative thoughts March 13, 2010 Peter Strong (Boulder, CO, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a great book full of insights into the patterns of negative beliefs and reactive thinking that forms the inner structure of panic attacks and social phobias. The secret is finding the way to resolve and neutralize the emotional energy that gives these thoughts and beliefs such power over us. For this I would also recommend mindfulness meditation, where you actually focus the transforming effect of mindfulness on the underlying emotions. I recommend 'The Path of Mindfulness Meditation' available through Amazon.
