Amazon.com Review If you are tired of struggling to make ends meet but don't know a 401(k) from Special K, this book is for you. Aimed specifically at "Generation Broke"--those in their twenties and thirties who are working yet buried in credit card debt and student loans--this user-friendly guide offers a clear introduction to practical investing and money management techniques that can turn even a dismal financial situation around. Bestselling author Suze Orman has a knack for taking the fear out of money matters, and in The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous &: Broke, she shows readers how to set priorities and achieve goals, whether it is to buy a house or save for retirement or pay for a child's education. She also offers inspiration to readers to face their financial problems and get started on a solution. After all, there is good news: young people still have the time to correct problems so that they will never be broke again. Readers who find terms such as diversification and IRA rollover scary--or worse, unimportant--will learn much from this book. In these pages, Orman clearly and succinctly explains what a FICO score is and why it's so important, offers the lowdown on stocks and mutual funds, provides career advice, and offers lots of tips on dealing with student loan debt, saving money even when times are tight, debt consolidation strategies, and the safest way for newlyweds to merge their finances. She also offers information on credit cards, including why canceling cards is not a good idea, when it makes sense to use them, and the best strategies for paying them off. It may not be the only money book you'll ever need, but it's an excellent place to start. --Shawn Carkonen All About Suze Orman The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous & Broke is financial expert Suze Orman's answer to a generation's cry for help. Love love love this book! August 19, 2010 C. E. Gasner (Owatonna, MN) I am relatively still young broke and fabulous but I have I have worked in the insurance business since I was 18 and do consider myself to be pretty knowledgeable when it comes to finances credit ratings, loans, mortgages, insurance. Even still there was lots of very valuable information that made things clearer to me. I definitely think this book should be required of all high schools students to read before they can graduate. This is the type of knowledge real people need to keep their head afloat in the real world. The only complaint I have is that it does not give much advice about bankruptcy except don't do it. Well I started reading this book the week my bankruptcy was settled and I wish she would have included something about that situation. EVERYONE SHOULD READ THIS BOOK!!
Mixed Feelings July 5, 2010 B. Calvary (Alexandria, VA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this book on the recommendation of a friend, and have mixed feelings about it so far. One of the advantages of the book is she ties it into her website, so you can lo on to her site, take a quiz, and she will recommend what chapters you review first because of your quiz answers. I thought that was great. Some of the advice was spot on. The first thing Suze recommended I do was find out my Fico score. This was good advice, and I understand why she did it. However, the next thing she recommended was I get a will and a living will set up. I'm still young, I don't have a family, and I don't have many assets. But until I check this step as complete, I can't find out what I should do next.
The advice inside the book is mostly useful, though she spends a lot of time telling you what she's not gonna tell you to do. "I'm not going to tell you to give up your starbucks habit. I'm not going to tell you to do this, I'm not going to say do that" Sometimes I wish she's just get to the point and tell me what she IS going to tell me.
Still, the book is more good than bad, I keep referencing it as I try to get my financial planning future situation.
Just what I needed to hear May 13, 2010 Savannah James I really liked this book. Very easy to read and understand. I am a recent graduate and need to know about IRA's, 401k's, and just how to manage my finances and this book has definitely put me on the right path. Right now I am YF&B but in a few years I will just be young and fabulous with the help of this book. Would reccomend to all my friends!
a must read for financial newbies. April 28, 2010 7340 I dont know why it took me so long to write a review for this book. But i think it means that much more to me in 2010 than it would have at the time I purchased this book in 2007. At that time, I was crawling my way to paying off my credit card debt, college loans and living above my means while working for a hardly-there salary. I had no savings, renting a plac and living paycheck to paycheck and going over it every month. It seemed as if only thing I had was stress that came with having no financial freedom. When i first received the book, i read it cover to cover, with the exception of the last 2 chapters(of 10)that dealt with owning a home and marriage. I never read the home chapter because it just seemed so out of reach! But I followed her directions and bookmarked her book all over the pages. I referred back to it all the time. Suze's very blunt and i needed that. Now almost 3 years later, I have savings, I'll be debt free this year, and above all, I was finally able to read her 9th chapter on owning a home and bought my own place. i guess i'm still saving the last chapter for when i get married. You may think your road to financial freedom is a long way ahead but for $11, this is one of the best guides that you can rely on to get you through the tough task. Stay positive but start getting real. It's not going to get done if you leave it alone, you have to take action. Good luck!
perfect gift for HS or college graduates April 8, 2010 Rena Cromer (Roanoke, VA) I've purchased several copies of this book as a graduation gift for people I know graduating from high school and/or college. I'm a firm believer that if I had the knowledge and tools that this book offers when I graduated from high school, my life would be drastically different financially speaking.
My hope is that every person I have given this book to can change their life. There are things in this book that they don't even cover in high school that are really important in the REAL WORLD. If anyone ever wants to go to college and get a student loan, take out a credit card, have a decent retirement, buy a car, or a home it's a good idea to read this book first and learn the RIGHT way to do it.
