Product Description

"I didn't tell anyone that I was going to Santa Fe to kill myself."

On the outside, Terri Cheney was a highly successful, attractive Beverly Hills entertainment lawyer. But behind her seemingly flawless façade lay a dangerous secret—for the better part of her life Cheney had been battling debilitating bipolar disorder and concealing a pharmacy's worth of prescriptions meant to stabilize her moods and make her "normal."

In bursts of prose that mirror the devastating highs and extreme lows of her illness, Cheney describes her roller-coaster life with shocking honesty—from glamorous parties to a night in jail; from flying fourteen kites off the edge of a cliff in a thunderstorm to crying beneath her office desk; from electroshock therapy to a suicide attempt fueled by tequila and prescription painkillers.

With Manic, Cheney gives voice to the unarticulated madness she endured. The clinical terms used to describe her illness were so inadequate that she chose to focus instead on her own experience, in her words, "on what bipolar disorder felt like inside my own body." Here the events unfold episodically, from mood to mood, the way she lived and remembers life. In this way the reader is able to viscerally experience the incredible speeding highs of mania and the crushing blows of depression, just as Cheney did. Manic does not simply explain bipolar disorder—it takes us in its grasp and does not let go.

In the tradition of Darkness Visible and An Unquiet Mind, Manic is Girl, Interrupted with the girl all grown up. This harrowing yet hopeful book is more than just a searing insider's account of what it's really like to live with bipolar disorder. It is a testament to the sharp beauty of a life lived in extremes.

5 out of 5 stars Manic Book by Terri Cheney   July 12, 2010

This is a great read ! The story, events and happenings are very interesting how she handles them. It also knocks down the sterotypes people tend to put on people with a mental disorder like: They can't hold down a job and they need a "crazy check" This woman was an attorney and know one knew about her manic disorder or otherwise known as Bi Polar. It made me feel like I could be anything I wanted to be if I just get on the right medication

4 out of 5 stars A horrible yet heroic life   April 28, 2010

Terri Cheney should be dead. She attempted suicide on several occasions, sometimes swallowing handfuls of pills, sometimes slashing her wrists in the tub. Every time she was in her own home, where she lived alone, yet miraculously she lived each time to tell the tale. "Manic: A Memoir" is the true story of her battle with manic-depression - a disease that robbed Terri of her lucrative career as an entertainment attorney, sometimes representing such celebrated clients as Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones.

In the same way that Terri's manic mind whipped through weeks at a time, I whipped through this book in a matter of days. It's the "curiosity factor" that makes you slow down to look at the car wreck on the highway that also makes it impossible to stop turning the pages of this book. You can't wait to see what she will do next. Terri takes you physically inside the disease - through the fidgeting, flirting fits of mania to fighting the paralyzing demons of depression. She has led a horrible and heroic life, ultimately coming through to champion the cause of mental illness. If she succeeded at suicide, the world would've lost a powerful writer without ever knowing it. - "Telling my story is what's kept me alive, even when death was at its most seductive. That's why I've chosen to share my personal history, although some of it is still painful to recall even through a haze of medication, mental illness, and electroshock therapy. But the disease thrives on shame, and shame thrives on silence, and I have been silent long enough. This book represents what I remember. This book is my truth".

One of the really outstanding books I have read. Terri Cheney takes you cinematically through her experiences and into her thoughts. A must-read for anyone with mental illness in the family. An emotional roller-coaster for eveyone else.

2 out of 5 stars Saddening   February 12, 2010

Well, I read this book at the request of a friend. I read the other reviews and think that the author faced some horrific bouts with the DOWNS and some very efficient/happy times with the UPS. Much like a yo-yo, I would think the cycles would be so hard to deal with. The DOWNS lower than one can imagine.

But, one of the reviewers said that the author seemed like a spoiled brat. I believe that to be true also.

But, I would wish this illness on no one. Have a couple of friends who deal with this in varying degress, I do know how crippling it is.

I don't know that I'd recommend the book just for reading. But, if you are trying to understand the plight of someone with Bi-Polar Disorder, it's somewhat enlightening.

I got through this book in just one evening because it kept me interested. I was able to get a better grasp on what it feels like to be bipolar. I thought the author did a good job of painting an honest picture. Yet, you can tell she wasn't looking for sympathy. I believe this book was Cheney's way of reaching out a helping hand to those who may be afflicted with the same mental disease. Good book.
