Product Description
A pampered Long Island princess hits the road in a converted bus with her wilderness-loving husband, travels the country for one year, and brings it all hilariously to life in this offbeat and romantic memoir.

Doreen and Tim are married psychiatrists with a twist: She’s a self-proclaimed Long Island princess, grouchy couch potato, and shoe addict. He's an affable, though driven, outdoorsman. When Tim suggests “chucking it all” to travel cross-country in a converted bus, Doreen asks, “Why can’t you be like a normal husband in a midlife crisis and have an affair or buy a Corvette?” But she soon shocks them both, agreeing to set forth with their sixty-pound dog, two querulous cats—and no agenda—in a 340-square-foot bus.

Queen of the Road is Doreen’s offbeat and romantic tale about refusing to settle; about choosing the unconventional road with all the misadventures it brings (fire, flood, armed robbery, and finding themselves in a nudist RV park, to name just a few). The marvelous places they visit and delightful people they encounter have a life-changing effect on all the travelers, as Doreen grows to appreciate the simple life, Tim mellows, and even the pets pull together. Best of all, readers get to go along for the ride through forty-seven states in this often hilarious and always entertaining memoir, in which a boisterous marriage of polar opposites becomes stronger than ever.

2 out of 5 stars Self-appointed Queen Should Stay Home   September 3, 2010

I am also obviously outnumbered, but I really did not like this book. I forced myself to finish it, hoping that it would get better, but only found myself getting more and more irritated. Anyone who is a true RVer would dearly love to be able to quit going to work for a year to travel the country in a very expensive custom-built bus ($1200 for a bathroom sink; marble countertops - really??). And yet Dr. Orion does very little but moan and complain about how her crazy husband is forcing her to do this. She screams at the sight of any insects, absolutely refuses to drive and instead perfects her martini recipes. She tries hard to be funny and endearing but I'm just not buying it. She comes across as self-important, spoiled and pampered. I have yet to figure out why her long-suffering husband would want to baby someone like he does his wife - she proudly relates that she does no cooking, no laundry, and no real work that I could spot; she calls him Project Nerd instead of appreciating the fact that she has a very handy husband. I feel like if I met her I would never want to be her friend. I think we're supposed to be grateful that she learns to be (slightly) less materialistic by the end of the trip, but really - it shouldn't take a very expensive year-long trip in pure travel luxury to do that. She needs to get over herself. I will be donating this book to the next free book swap I can find.

And in case I were to get accused of jealousy, I have a high-powered degree too (just like her) and I love to go RVing in my cheap little travel trailer. I have no intention of ever trading it in for a half-million dollar (or more) bus. What a self-indulgent waste.

Loved this book. I enjoyed both the humorous and educational aspects of the book. I found it easy to relate to the author. Also liked reading about the relationship between her and her husband. This book reminded me of "A Walk in the Woods" by Bill Bryson. I definitely recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars I loved it!   May 15, 2010

I love light and easy and funny reads....Queen of the Road fits that category for me. Traveling the country in a travel trailer fits me, too. My husband and I travel a great deal, but never for a full year! This trip was a huge departure from Doreen's lifestyle and comfort level. I loved reading her description of life before the year-long trip, during the trip, and who she has become as a result of the trip. I enjoyed her conversational writing style, parentheses and all. I enjoyed her self-depricating humor. Having visited many of the places Doreen and Tim explored brought back wonderful memories of our own travels around the USA. I loved most of all who Doreen became as a result of the adventures with Tim and the bus with a will of its own. I can't wait to read it again some time.

The book is a HOOT! I enjoyed the tale of the author's journey in their transformed bus. Any RVer will identify with it.

Yes she is!!! I LOVED this book! The adventures and adjustments that had to be made to live in a converted bus...oy! Funny, hilarious! I think I almost wet my pants a couple of times... This was the most fun I've had reading a book in a long time!!! I get the distinct feeling that this is as close as I want to get to a life but will gladly live it through Ms. Orion! :)
