Product Description

Can a haunted man help the dead find peace?

Markhat is a Finder, charged with the post-war task of tracking down sons and fathers gone suddenly missing when an outbreak of peace left the army abandoned where they stood. But now it-s ten years on after the war, and about all he-s finding is trouble.

This time, trouble comes in the form of a rich widow with a problem. Her dearly departed husband, Ebed Merlat, keeps ambling back from the grave for nocturnal visits. Markhat saw a lot of during the war, but he-s never seen anyone, rich or poor, rise from the grave and go tromping around the landscape. But for the right price, he-s willing to look into it.

As a storm gathers and night falls, Markhat finds darker things than even murder lurk amid the shadows of House Merlat.

This book has been previously published.

Warning, this title is rife with the walking dead, sarcastic butlers, barking dogs and ghostly dances.

4 out of 5 stars I liked the book   April 2, 2010
Still a kid (NYC, NY USA)
This book was a surprise for me. I have had it on my Kindle for awhile but the synopsis did not catch my interest. I was going to archive it without reading it but decided to give it a fast cursory run through. It caught and held my attention. I finished it in one sitting.

The butler and the protagonist were the most interesting characters. During the storm the action was a little confusing but that did not detract from the over all read. Being a teacher I just had to make note of grammatical/typo errors. There were no egregious errors that detracted from the story.

Is it me or do the Kindle editions of books have more errors than the paperback/hardbound books? I have wanted to literally compare a Kindle edition to the paperback version. Guess I am too cheap and/or too busy to do this. One day I will summon up enough interest/motivation to do this experiment.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful surprise!   March 20, 2010

The synopsis does not do this story justice. I began the story with some doubt if I would like it but it pulled me in with incredible speed. WOW! Dead Man's Rain should be made into a movie. A smooth read, you keep turning the pages unable to stop. Exciting, thrilling and a fun read but I don't want to give away any surprises. Wonderful read, I hope the author continues with more such books.

4 out of 5 stars A fabulously fruity whodunit.   March 17, 2010

This is the sort of (I hate to use the word short) story, you could read on a flight and not once be thinking "where are those dang peanuts". A rip snorting whodunit murder mystery with a twist of lemon.

Frank Tuttle has gone and developed a character for whom you would happily be called side-kick. Cool, but with a side of dag. Dag you say? Yes dag. But cool, with a weird name. I liked him a lot. You will too.

Our enigmatic hero, Markhat (told you it was a weird name), is a character that was begging to be written. If you can imagine the canniness of Sam Vimes (Discworld), the moral character of Roland of Gilead (Dark Tower), and the sauciness of Malcolm Reynolds (Firefly), then you are dancing round the edges of what I imagine Markhat to be like. You may imagine him differently, but regardless, he is definitely a character worth getting to know.

The story is a real page turner (or Kindle clicker), with a bit of everything for everyone. Since its a short(ish) story, I wouldn't want to spoil it by giving away too much of the plot. The product description sums it up short and sweet and without spoiling all the fun parts.

I think this will be a fantastic series featuring our finder (you know what that is...you've just read the product description), having said that, the product description does not do it justice, and neither does this, my review. Dead Man's Rain for me was just an introduction, a teaser if you will, an entrée to whet your appetite for more.

If you like your fantasy/action/adventure a little left of centre, with delightfully developed characters, sassy dialogue and a setting teetering on the obscure, this is one you just might like to try.

Only four stars, because this particular story was just a bit too short(ish), but I do expect to see much more of Frank Tuttle parked on my Kindle in the future.

5 out of 5 stars A thoroughly enjoyable read (Kindle formatting review at the end)   March 6, 2010
Dawn S. Miller (CO USA)
Oh, wow. This is why I got a Kindle, to find fun new authors who write new and original stories. Dead Man's Rain is set in a gritty world where magic happens, but it's not common, where ogres live alongside humans and the occasional elf, where rich vampires hunt the night with the permission of the local authorities, and where finder Markhat has unwanted assistance in getting cases from his neighbor, the card reader Mama Hog. And then you get to the case itself . . . .

Along with creating fascinating characters, the author gives a lot of little details that make the story come alive.

One note, though: as other reviewers have mentioned, this is a short story/novella and not a novel.

Would I reread this book? I already have.

Would I spend money on this book? I would, and I did. In fact, I ended up buying all of his books, even Wistril Compleat, which is very different in tone and content.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyed This Sample? Reviewer: Renee S. NY.C.   August 26, 2009

The story itself was good, and I did enjoy it, but I feel cheated that I thought I was downloading a book, and instead got a very short story. I hate short stories! There is no chance to dig in and get to know the characters, and there is no room for the plot enrichment that makes a story really satisfying. I'll look more carefully next time.
