Product Description Danger stalks Lucas Davenport at work and all too close to home, in the superlative new thriller by the #1 New York Times' bestselling author. For twenty years, John Sandford's novels have been beloved for their "ingenious plots, vivid characters, crisp dialogue and endless surprises" (The Washington Post), and nowhere are those more in evidence than in the sudden twists and shocks of Wicked Prey. The Republicans are coming to St. Paul for their convention. Throwing a big party is supposed to be fun, but crashing the party are a few hard cases the police would rather stayed away. Chief among them is a crew of professional stickup men who've spotted several lucrative opportunities, ranging from political moneymen with briefcases full of cash to that armored-car warehouse with the weakness in its security system. All that's headache enough for Lucas Davenport - but what's about to hit him is even worse. A while back, a stray bullet put a pimp and petty thief named Randy Whitcomb in a wheelchair, and, ever since, the man has been nursing his grudge into a full head of psychotic steam. He blames Davenport for the bullet, but it's no fun just shooting him. That wouldn't be painful enough. Not when Davenport has a pretty fourteen-year-old adopted daughter that Whitcomb can target instead. . . .And then there's the young man with the .50 caliber sniper rifle and the right-wing-crazy background, roaming through a city filled with the most powerful politicians on earth. . . . Rich with his brilliant trademark suspense and some of the best characters in suspense fiction, Wicked Prey is further proof that "Sandford is one of the most consistently entertaining crime writers working today." John Sandford - Lucas August 18, 2010 Stacy 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have finished all of John Sandford's Lucas Davenport series except the newest release which is still in hardcopy not paperback.
All books received from Amazon were received in great shape and new, just as ordered.
Hardly Up to Snuff August 18, 2010 G. B. Talovich (Wulai, Taiwan, ROC) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
My friend James asked me to read this book. He began it three or four times, but the beginning is so dreadful he couldn't get any further into it, and wanted my opinion.
I agree. The beginning is so bad that I kept looking at the cover to confirm that this was a book by John Sanford. Once you get past the first couple chapters, it does improve, but it is hardly up to Sanford's usually high standards.
This confuses me. People online say that Sanford's son is doing the writing now and the father simply edits. That would explain the poor writing, but why? I had thought that Sanford, who has won a Pulitzer Prize for his reporting, wrote for the enjoyment of his craft. Apparently that has gone past and now he's in it for the fame or the money, I don't know. But his son is such a lousy writer that he can't write dialogue without F. Junior, powerful dialogue does not come from writing obscenities that ceased to shock a decade or more before you were born.
If the son is going to keep writing the Prey series, I wish they would put his name on the cover, so we know we don't have to spend time or money on the book.
Never ending twists! July 24, 2010 R. Belanger Wicked Prey was the first book I had read by John Sandford. I had read a good review of this book in our local newspaper so I bought it. It was great! Good character development in that you really felt you could picture each one. Great story line for a mystery with lots of surprising twists and turns and in the end (whew!) everything comes out together. Lots of different emotions and tensions kept me riveted. Look forward to reading more of John Sandford.
mystery July 2, 2010 Diane Stewart I watch for John Sandford books. He is always entertaining with strange characters and just plain good mystery fiction.
A veiw on the Prey Series June 28, 2010 C. D. Sanders (Kansas) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
John Sandford is the master of a great mystery writer. He is the master of a great mystery writer. The Lucas Davenport Mysteries series is my favorite.
However, the use of family members driving the suspense of the story line isn't my choice of how to keep a plot flowing. The reason, is most readers want a story line that doesn't imply their hero's family is in danger. The readers have enough family problems and just want a time to escape from "life" for a few moments of time. I was disappointed with this novel because of this story line.
