Product Description
A FASCINATING, HEARTBREAKING, AND ULTIMATELY UPLIFTING TALE OF SELF-DISCOVERY FROM THE BELOVED ACTRESS WHO EARNED A PERMANENT PLACE IN THE HEARTS OF MILLIONS WHEN SHE WAS JUST A CHILD

To fans of the hugely successful television series Little House on the Prairie, Melissa Gilbert grew up in a fantasy world with a larger-than-life father, friends and family she could count on, and plenty of animals to play with. Children across the country dreamed of the Ingalls’ idyllic life—and so did Melissa.

With candor and humor, the cherished actress traces her complicated journey from buck-toothed Laura "Halfpint" Ingalls to Hollywood starlet, wife, and mother. She partied with the Brat Pack, dated heartthrobs like Rob Lowe and bad boys like Billy Idol, and began a self-destructive pattern of addiction and codependence. She eventually realized that her career on television had earned her popularity, admiration, and love from everyone but herself.

Through hard work, tenacity, sobriety, and the blessings of a solid marriage, Melissa has accepted her many different identities and learned to laugh, cry, and forgive in new ways. Women everywhere may have idolized her charming life on Little House on the Prairie, but Melissa’s own unexpectedly honest, imperfect, and down-to-earth story is an inspiration.

2 out of 5 stars Prairie Tale: A memoir   August 21, 2010

I was so excited to begin reading this book, but after I got into it I was so disappointed. What a waste of my money and a disappointment in Melissa Gilbert. I found such foul language used that I just quit reading it. Plus you couldn't tell anything about what really happened in her life other than she slept with this one or that one and all the name dropping. Nothing really about her life as to what she was like as a child where her children were born or any other interesting things about Melissa's life. Totally waste of money for the book and I wish I'd never bought it. Certainly wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

I'm going to try and keep this short, honest, and too the point.

Very good book. Really interesting, wow she has had an amazing life and knows some amazing people. I had previously read Nellie's book and Mary's book. I read this one to get her side of events and people on the Little House set. There is maybe 2-3 full chapters about Little House, her interaction with the rest of the cast or the episodes. Very disappointing. Nellie's book is by far the best of all of them.

Most of the book is about which drugs she took, how much alcohol she drank and who she slept with. Let me tell you, according to the book, she has slept with most of Hollywood and many from New York.

Like I said, this is a really good book, just not a book you want a young fan to read or for anyone seeking to know what went on in the Prairie.

4 out of 5 stars pretty good   August 16, 2010

So far it's a great book. I have the Kindle version. I didn't realize when I bought it that it wasn't text to talk enabled. I wouldn't have bought the book if I had picked up on that. It's not that I'm too cheap to buy it on CD but I travel a lot during the day and like to continue a book I'm in the middle of reading by listening to it in the car. Imagine how disappointed I was when I started reading this at the motel and was looking forward to listening to some more of it on the 8 hour drive I had ahead of me and then realizing I wasn't going to get to do that. Is it greed from the publisher that stops you from letting us have the text to speech turned on? I'm putting this info in the review because I think as a "Kindle" version it's a shame when we miss that part of it.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining & fun read   August 10, 2010
Dragon Lover's Wife (North Royalton, OH USA)
Thoroughly enjoyed reading the back story of a woman I've watched grow up before my eyes. Highly recommended for anyone interested in 'half pint' info or just a good growing up in hollywood, unique life of an adopted child or an adult female alcoholic recovery story. This book delivers on all counts. Loved the humor, loved the honesty.

5 out of 5 stars Honest. Funny. Forgiving.   July 28, 2010

I don't get the negative reviews at all. This was one of the most honest memoirs I have ever read. I think people are expecting her to be like her TV character. GROW UP!! People offended by the language need to get over themselves. As far as the name dropping. She wasn't name dropping. These were the people she encountered. Guess what guys. She really did know Micheal Landon. I think they did a TV show together or something. I think it is brave to be that honest. Her descriptions of her sexual exploits were honest but not graphic. On the contrary, I think how she speaks so tenderly about her first time was beautiful. She obviously loves her kids and that includes her step sons. I felt honored to be let into her heart and soul so intimately. Thank you Melissa for sharing so much with us.
